HANOI — Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi saved two penalties as defending champion Japan beat Australia in a dramatic shootout to advance to the Asian Cup semifinals on Saturday evening, after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time.

NAGOYA (Kyodo) The Toyota Motor Corp. group became the world's top automobile seller for the January-June period for the first time ever, outdoing General Motors Corp. of the United States, according to sales data released Friday by the Japanese automaker.

In the April-June period, however, global auto sales of the Toyota group lagged behind GM, after outselling the U.S. automaker for the first time in the January-March quarter.

Powerful Typhoon Man-yi, which has left at least two people dead, two missing and 59 injured, made landfall in Kyushu on Saturday afternoon, forcing thousands to evacuate and causing power outages and transportation disruptions.

The season's fourth typhoon was expected to continue to lash the Japanese archipelago, traveling along the southern coast of Honshu through the Kanto region over the long weekend, according to the Meteorological Agency, which warned of heavy rains, floods and strong winds.

Democratic Party of Japan President Ichiro Ozawa declared Thursday that he would resign if the opposition camp fails to win a majority in the Upper House election July 29.

Ozawa told reporters Thursday morning that the ideal scenario would be for the DPJ to win a majority on its own, but the bottom line is that all the opposition parties band together.
