Wii-toting Nintendo surpasses Sony in market value

Wii-toting Nintendo surpasses Sony in market value
Bloomberg
Nintendo Co.'s market value on Monday surpassed that of Sony Corp., a company with eight times more revenue, underscoring the success of the Wii game console in outselling rival PlayStation 3.

Shares of Nintendo, based in Kyoto, rose to a record 46,350 yen on Monday, valuing the company at 6.57 trillion yen, and overtaking Sony's 6.48 trillion yen capitalization in trading. Nintendo's stock closed 0.8 percent lower at 45,100 yen.

Sony, which overtook Nintendo as the world's biggest console maker after the PlayStation 2 was introduced in 2000, suffered production delays and slow sales of its latest player. Wii's lower price and a wandlike controller that players swing like a sword or tennis racket helped Nintendo widen its sales lead over the PlayStation 3 in Japan last month.

Three women were killed and at least three other people were injured Tuesday in an explosion at an annex of a women-only spa facility near a busy section of Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, firefighters said.

The three fatalities and two of the injured were female employees of the Shiespa facility, according to the firefighters and a group company of the spa's operator. The third injured person was believed to be a male passerby.

Authorities initially believed the explosion, which occurred around 2:30 p.m., was due to a malfunctioning boiler in the basement of the one-story annex.

Japan's master of an ancient Muslim art

By TOMOKO OTAKE
Staff writer
For Kouichi Honda, writing a beautiful line is what life is about. Getting every detail right — the subtle curves, the varying thicknesses and the density of the ink — matters to him as much as life itself.

Arabic calligrapher Kouichi Honda beside his 1999 work "Red Desert," which was inspired by his years spent in the Middle East working for a Tokyo-based surveying company, and which features quotations from the Koran executed in four different styles of Arabic script. TOMOKO OTAKE PHOTOS

The 61-year-old professor of international relations at Daito Bunka University in Saitama Prefecture is Japan's leading authority on Arabic calligraphy, a devotional art form that has evolved over the course of 1,400 years and has detailed rules determining every single facet of the practice, whether the script is executed on paper or vellum or is fired into the gorgeous ceramic tiling that can hardly fail to astonish any visitor to a mosque.

Iwojima, site of fierce battle, is officially renamed Iwoto

By REIJI YOSHIDA
Staff writer
Iwojima, the famous patch of volcanic rock in the Pacific where Japanese and U.S. forces fought a fierce battle toward the end of World War II, is no longer known by that name, officially speaking.

Long known as Iwojima, this island 1,200 km south of Tokyo is now officially known as Iwoto. KYODO PHOTO

The Geographical Survey Institute, which conducts surveys and provides basic geographic data for the nation, announced Monday that the official name of the island is now Iwoto, which is what local residents called it before the war.

Iwoto means "sulfur island." Since the Japanese word for island can be expressed as "shima" or "to," the meaning will stay exactly the same.

Why Japanese are uneasy with Democrats
Japan's political elite has an unfavorable opinion of
the Democratic Party in the US and thus looks with trepidation
on the possibility of a change in the White House after next
year's elections. Partly this is based on stereotypes that do
not provide a fair evaluation of recent Democratic administrations,
which over time have come to appreciate and nurture the US-Japan
relationship. - Kazuyo Kato  (Feb 1, '07)
